Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence, rumination, and marital intimacy with the quality of life of nurses in Rasht.

Methodology: This applied correlational study included all nurses working in government hospitals in Rasht in 2025 (N=2650). A total of 336 nurses were selected through convenience non-probability sampling based on the limited Cochran formula. Data were collected using the WHO Quality of Life Questionnaire (1996), Bradbury & Greaves Emotional Intelligence Scale (2005), Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow Rumination Questionnaire (1991), and Walker & Thompson Marital Intimacy Scale (1983). Data analysis was conducted in SPSS 24 using descriptive statistics and multivariate regression.

Findings: Multivariate regression indicated a positive and significant relationship between emotional intelligence and quality of life (R=0.493, p<0.001), explaining 34.6% of the variance. Rumination showed a significant negative relationship with quality of life (R=–0.325, p<0.001), predicting 24.7% of the variance. Marital intimacy was positively and significantly associated with quality of life (R=0.419, p<0.001), accounting for 32.8% of the variance.

Conclusion: The results suggest that emotional intelligence and marital intimacy substantially enhance nurses’ quality of life, whereas rumination significantly undermines it. Interventions aimed at strengthening emotional competencies and relational functioning, along with reducing maladaptive cognitive patterns, may help improve nurses’ well-being and overall quality of life.
