Objective: The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral couple therapy on marital burnout and interpersonal emotion regulation among couples referring to counseling centers and psychological clinics in Tehran.
Methodology: This study was a quasi-experimental research with a pretest-posttest-follow-up design and a control group. The statistical population included couples referring to counseling centers and psychological clinics in Tehran in 2025. The sample consisted of 30 couples selected through available and purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group and a control group, with 15 couples in each group. The experimental group received eight sessions of cognitive-behavioral couple therapy, while the control group received no structured intervention during this period. Data were collected using the Marital Burnout Questionnaire and the Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using repeated-measures analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test in SPSS version 26.
Findings: The results of repeated-measures ANOVA showed that the effect of time on marital burnout was significant, F = 142.35, p < 0.001, η² = 0.835. The group effect was also significant, F = 24.88, p < 0.001, η² = 0.470. Moreover, the time × group interaction effect on marital burnout was significant, F = 118.59, p < 0.001, η² = 0.809. For interpersonal emotion regulation, the effect of time, F = 96.42, p < 0.001, η² = 0.775, the group effect, F = 21.53, p < 0.001, η² = 0.435, and the time × group interaction effect, F = 89.27, p < 0.001, η² = 0.761, were significant. Bonferroni comparisons indicated significant changes in the experimental group from pretest to posttest and from pretest to follow-up, while the posttest-follow-up differences were not significant.
Conclusion: The findings indicated that cognitive-behavioral couple therapy significantly reduced marital burnout and improved interpersonal emotion regulation among couples. The stability of changes at follow-up suggests that this intervention can be used as an effective and practical approach in counseling and family therapy centers for couples experiencing marital difficulties.
