Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of self-care training and self-compassion training on the self-confidence of kidney transplant patients.
Methodology: The research design was quasi-experimental, employing a pretest-posttest design with a control group and a follow-up phase. The statistical population included all kidney transplant patients who visited Razi Hospital in Rasht during the first quarter of 2024 for follow-up care with urology and dialysis physicians, totaling 176 individuals. The sample of the present study consisted of 45 participants. The Sarmah et al. (2011) Self-Confidence Questionnaire was used as the measurement tool. The self-care and self-compassion intervention sessions were conducted in two experimental groups, each consisting of eight weekly 60-minute sessions. The interventions were implemented based on Orem’s (2001) protocol for self-care and Gilbert’s (2009) protocol for self-compassion. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test.
Findings: The results indicated a statistically significant difference between the effects of self-care training and self-compassion training on participants’ levels of self-confidence (p < .05). Moreover, self-compassion training was more effective in enhancing the self-esteem of kidney transplant patients compared to self-care training.
Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that implementing psychological interventions focusing on self-compassion, alongside teaching self-care principles, can provide a comprehensive approach to improving the psychological well-being and self-confidence of kidney transplant patients.
