Abstract

The purpose of this research was to predict the behavioral inhibition system based on intolerance of failure and difficulty in regulating emotions. The current research was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive and correlational in terms of method. The statistical population of the present study included all clients aged 20 to 30 in 2023 who had referred to private counseling and psychotherapy centers in District 3 of Tehran. Hence, the sample size of the research was determined to be 200 people based on Kline's (2016) view. For the purpose of sampling, the statistical sample of the research was selected using the targeted and available sampling method by referring or sending the questionnaire form to the relevant centers. The tools used to collect information included the revised scale of sensitivity to reinforcement by Jackson (2009), Harrington's failure tolerance questionnaire (2005), and Gratz and Roemer's (2004) emotional regulation difficulty questionnaire. Finally, the data obtained by completing the collected questionnaires were statistically analyzed using SPSS software and Pearson's correlation coefficient and multivariate regression. Intolerance of failure with a beta coefficient of -0.22 and difficulty in regulating emotions with a beta coefficient of -0.24 can positively predict the behavioral inhibition system of subjects (p < 0.01). It also showed that intolerance of failure and difficulty in emotion regulation can predict 28.9% of the behavioral inhibition system in the statistical sample of the study. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is possible to predict the failure of the behavioral inhibition system of adolescents through the variables of difficulty in regulating emotions and intolerance.
