Modeling Depressive Symptoms Based on Early Maladaptive Schemas and Self-Compassion: The Mediating Role of Maladaptive Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies in University Students

Objective: This study aimed to model depressive symptoms based on early maladaptive schemas and self-compassion by examining the mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies among university students.
Methodology: This fundamental study employed a descriptive-correlational design based on structural equation modeling. The statistical population consisted of students at the University of Isfahan, and data from 360 students selected through convenience sampling were analyzed. Participants completed the Young Schema Questionnaire, Neff’s Self-Compassion Scale, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and structural equation modeling with SPSS and AMOS.
Findings: The proposed structural model demonstrated satisfactory fit to the data (χ²/df=2.14, CFI=0.95, TLI=0.94, GFI=0.93, RMSEA=0.056, and SRMR=0.043). Early maladaptive schemas had significant positive direct effects on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (β=0.55, p<0.001) and depressive symptoms (β=0.24, p<0.001). Self-compassion had significant negative direct effects on maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (β=-0.38, p<0.001) and depressive symptoms (β=-0.21, p<0.001). Maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies also had a significant positive effect on depressive symptoms (β=0.49, p<0.001). Bootstrap analysis indicated significant indirect effects of early maladaptive schemas (β=0.27, 95% CI [0.19, 0.36]) and self-compassion (β=-0.19, 95% CI [-0.27, -0.12]) on depressive symptoms through maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies, confirming partial mediation. Overall, the variables included in the model explained 62% of the variance in depressive symptoms.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that early maladaptive schemas function as cognitive vulnerability factors, whereas self-compassion serves as a psychological protective factor associated with depressive symptoms among university students, with maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies partially explaining these relationships.
