Effectiveness of Compassion-Based Education on Ego Strength and Marital Self-Regulation in Women Referring to Counseling Centers of Ahvaz City

Abstract

Background and Objective: Problems and challenges in the marital relationships negatively affect ego strength and marital self-regulation. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aimed of determine the effectiveness of compassion-based education on ego strength and marital self-regulation in women referring to counseling centers.

Methods and Materials: The present research was a quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with experimental and control groups. The population of this research was women referring to counseling centers of Ahvaz in the spring of 2023 year, which from them number of 30 people after reviewing the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling method and randomly assigned into two groups of 15 people. The experimental group underwent 8 sessions of 90 minute compassion-based education and during this time the control group did not receive any intervention. The data of the present research were collected with the ego strength inventory (Markstrom et al., 1997) and marital self-regulation scale (Wilson et al., 2005) and analyzed with the chi-square and multivariate analysis of covariance methods in SPSS version 24 software.

Findings: The results of data analysis showed that the women of experimental and control groups had significant differences in terms of both variables of ego strength and marital self-regulation. In the other words, compassion-based education led to increase ego strength and marital self-regulation in women referring to counseling centers (P<0.001).

Conclusion: According to the results of this study, using from the compassion-based education in the vulnerable groups such as women referring to counseling centers can improve ego strength and marital self-regulation.
