Abstract

Background and Objective: Suicide is one of the most serious and critical issues in the field of mental health, particularly among students as one of the foremost vulnerable groups in this field. Hence, identifying the  risk factors in students suicide could set the stage for applying appropriate interventions with the aim of preventing and controlling the phenomenon of suicide. This study examines the role of traumatic childhood experiences, attributional styles and internalized shame in predicting students' suicidal thoughts.

Methods and Materials: This study is descriptive-correlational in terms of its fundamental purpose and in terms of data collection method. The statistical population included the students of Tabriz University in the first semester of 2023-2024, of which 376 were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. The research tools included the Suicidal Thoughts Scale (Beck, 1979), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Bernstein et al., 2003), the Attributional Styles Questionnaire (Peterson et al., 1982) and the Internalized Shame Scale (Cook, 1993). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27 software and Pearson correlation and multiple regression tests.

Findings: The findings showed that there is a positive and significant correlation between traumatic childhood experiences (emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect, physical neglect), negative attributional style and internal shame with suicidal thoughts, and between positive attributional style and suicidal thoughts, There is a negative and significant correlation (P<0.01). Also, Regression analysis showed that traumatic childhood experiences, attributional styles and internalized shame are significant predictors of students' suicidal thoughts (P<0.01).

Conclusion: Traumatic childhood experiences, attributional styles and internalized shame                are significant predictors of students' suicidal thoughts. Therefore, it is suggested that psychologists and specialists pay attention to the role of these variables in order to reduce students' suicidal thoughts.
